My pal Jackie and I joined the WAVE for the first time last year --- we had the best time, travelling ALL THE WAY from Bainbridge Island :-) So this year we're doing it again, bringing another gal and tackling the Burly Girl route (makes the good food at the finish line all the more enjoyable!). The energy at this incredibly well organized event is fantastic and this is such a great cause, who wouldn't want to participate?! We are looking forward to another great experience. Thank You!

I heard about the bike ride through Eastside Domestic Violence Center (I attend a support group for victims of domestic violence.) I am about to divorce my husband after ten years of physical, emotional, and verbal abuse on me and our six children. On outward appearance by many, I was thought to be your typical suburban housewife, living in a posh upscale mansion and driving a nice new car...none would have ever suspected the horror going on behind my closed doors. I hid things well, people never knew the inner struggle and depression I had simmering behind my attractive appearance with a jovial attitude. I now realize, there is never a place for shame or embarrassment- domestic violence afflicts all nations, cultures, and races of people, and surpasses all socioeconomic levels.

I am riding Sunday to prove there is freedom, from the destruction and patterns of domestic violence, to rise above and revel. Despite the fact I have a permanent debilitating physical injury in my shoulder (from the physical abuse I sustained), it will never stop me from bicycling (one of my passions in life) the full distance of the longest ride- 62 miles. I will stand and be counted among girls and women everywhere, and be the voice of those who are molested, beaten, verbally abused, emotionally tortured, and raped; from their darkest hour of anguish, depression, and fear, to their smile of denial, and mental trap of silence. I will speak out, be seen, and heard; the triumph will be celebrated.

Thank you to the staff at the Eastside Domestic Violence Center....Because of your help and guidance, I will forever be proud of who I am- and for once in my life, know how it feels to love myself.

Penny, your powerful story keeps it all in perspective why so many volunteers work hard all year long to create this fun event for women! We are thrilled you are riding with us this year. Your courage and strength to share your story and to break the silence is admirable. You are our hero! Ride the Burly Girl proudly and we will cheer you all along the way and in at the finish!!
